Ozone effective in destroying SARS coronavirus sparks theory on SARS-CoV-2

March 9, 2020

A recent report from Quail Systems* has suggested that ozone could be a crucial tool in preventing further spread of SARS-CoV-2.

Combatting infectious diseases

Researchers have discovered** that the most recent form of coronavirus – COVID 19 – is 80% similar to the SARS virus in its genome sequences. Therefore, it is predicted that ozone will be equally as effective in preventing and controlling the spread of the new strain of coronavirus.

President and CEO of Quail Systems, Robert Smith, says:

“Ozone has been proven to kill the SARS coronavirus.

“This strand has a similar makeup to SARS; therefore, we anticipate that ozone may kill the new, stronger strand, COVID-19.

“For decades, we have seen that ozone is the safest and most cost-effective option for protecting people by killing dangerous viruses and other threats.”

How does Aqueous Ozone kill viruses?

Aqueous Ozone is proven to kill some of the toughest viruses including norovirus, rotavirus and Norwalk virus. SARS-CoV-2 is a liped envelope virus, which could actually make it easier to kill than these other infectious diseases. In previous studies, 99% of viruses have been destroyed by ozone and have had visible damage to their envelope proteins after 30 seconds of exposure to the chemical-free disinfectant.

New testing update

Over the past couple of months, Tersano have been working tirelessly to arrange lab-based tests which reveal SAO’s effectiveness against viruses such as Sars-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Since this blog post was written, further tests have been conducted, the results of which you can see on our ‘Virus updates’ page.
